The first time I played in a band was a worship band at Grace Baptist With Tim, Nick, Amy and Van.
We had horns and even wrote some of our own material and became an official ska band called "Self Titled"
which later became "Purpose Beyond Reason". We played some shows, me and Tim were like 14, we even had
some lame label looking at us, it was a pretty big deal back then. We got around to recording like
7 songs on my little brothers karaoke machine. That ended and Tim and I played a few shows doing some
worship/cover gig deals, with some friends of ours including Tom and Darrell, just to keep things going. haha.
Oh yeah, me and Tim we're both in marching band(he played clarinet ha) & jazz band also.
So then things
died down for like a month, then Tim started jamming with Andy on drums, I was playing bass in another band
and I admit I kind of felt left out but some how I made Tim believe that I was decent at guitar so I
stared playing guitar with them and basically learned to play by watching Tim. Tommy got on bass. Some how now,
I had become the lead singer and 2nd guitarist of "Admitting Defeat". Which was a far cry from drumming.
Anyway, we played shows and tried to make a name for ourselves, recorded a 5-6 song demo thing at Andy's house,
I remember that I recorded vocals in the family room and Andy's parents we're like 15 feet away in the other room
and I had the whole band staring at me too. neat. Then some where along the way we had a name change to "Holdfast".
Things really started to progress, but the problem was me and Tim didn't get along to well, I really think
the problem was we are very much alike but not willing to admit it, I think a little bit of that still exists today.
I ended up leaving the band and going to work at a camp for a few month only to return back and immediately
get back with Holdfast in the studio and we started up shows again, Tim had taken over singing, so this made
me strictly guitar. Things we're amazing at this point, for the band. Anyway. Starting in 9th grade, Tim also
led worship at southwinds church and I would occasionally fill in for the drummer who ever it was, and continued
to fill in until today, which was Tim's last Sunday. funny. The story goes on to Holdfast kind of slowing down,
all of us thinking about the future, who's moving where, I had the chance to tour with another band and
took the opportunity and left the band AGAIN, not necessarily for the tour, but for change I suppose. A few months
before I left for tour, we had started a College worship band, once again me on drums and Tim on guitar.
That was a bummer that I had to leave but take the good with the bad, I got back from tour, roughly a
month later and jumped back into the College worship for the last two weeks. Last Sunday and this Sunday I
filled in at southwinds again, and like I said earlier it was Tim's last Sunday, anyway, on top of all of this
This weekend we're Holdfast's last two shows for quite some time. Who know maybe forever. They had me play
since their replacement couldn't make it.
It's not all quite this cluttered and I'm sure I left some things out,
but stretch this out over 5 years and there you have it...5 years.
Here's my scrambled point...
Tim's going to ucsd this weds.
and I just realized what a past we've had, and to be honest I think we hung out maybe 5 times aside from playing shows, practicing or anything church related.
Ha, I remember we went bridge jumping and he was freaking out, but finally he jumped but when he landed he was in a sitting position, haha so funny. He couldn't even move.
We even had the same girl as both of out longest relationships. Weird.
I'm really am going to miss him, like...jeeze, just look at that. I seriously didn't realize.
I think I just typed this out because I wanted to see for myself.
here's to one of the best friends I've had and one of the coolest guys I know and probably will ever meet.
and I didn't even know it until now.
