Berry picking countdown activated

A guilty pleasure I cannot wait to experience again: plump, locally picked strawberries dipped in pure bitter cocoa power and eaten, with as few frills as possible. A very un-American dessert, I know- it's rare that anyone shares my level of affection for this summer treat. But the heavenly taste of a REAL strawberry does not need masking by any other ingredients. The cocoa powder is an afterthought. Grocery store strawberries are depressing, their false, mediocre redness a misleading eyesore from their little plastic prisons. But I'm not angry at them, the strawberries. They had no desire to be picked two weeks before fully ripening, flash frozen, sprayed with chemicals to create a false ripening and the expected red hue, and shipped across the country to be a disappointing breakfast sundry. They would have been much happier staying in California.
