It comes preloaded with basics like calendar, weather, maps, itunes, safari, youtube, mail program, contacts, calendar, clock, notepad.
It also has the apps store built right in, as long as he's connected via Wi-Fi he can download from the apps store or itunes. I've downloaded tons of apps and they're all free. And yes, you can download movies as well from iTunes. I would imagine they would be slow to download on a wifi connection.
It can sync up with your Microsoft Outlook.
The new one is about $227 give or take a dollar depending on where you buy it. It comes preloaded with Version 2.0.
The refurbished 1st generation ones are available on apple's website for $179 and come preloaded with 1.4 (does not support applications) and can be upgraded via iTunes for $9.99. The only other difference between the 1st gen. and the 2nd gen. is that the 2nd generation has a volume adjuster on the outside instead of on screen, which I would have appreciated but I live without. Some people would have a hard time.

i LOVES mine.
i did pay for two applications- groceryiq (i think) and koi pond, both of which were worth every penny (koi pond for the amusement alone)
