Over the last few days I've been thinking a lot about how I write songs. Writing music is sort of weird for me, because it's probably the only creative thing that I do entirely and see it all the way through. I have written stories but rarely have I ever finished them. I start them, get a ways in, and then they sort of dry up before I get anywhere ( Read more... )

Have you listened to half-written songs months after you put them away? I did this recently when I was looking for tapes to record over with my 4-track. I was quite surprised by how decent they were and found ways where I could conclude them. I think it comes with bringing a different insight and emotional state to the song.

Unfortunately, I don't really record most of the half-written stuff, though I really should. Often times I forget those bits and pieces of songs that I have written.

It's kind of weird, but some songs have taken a few years to finish. And that's without ever having recorded them. They just sort of incubate within my brain and then whenever something comes to me I add to it.
