Really? How so? I'm really curious. The way her family was, the way she thought and lived, the atmosphere of the clinic, and the way a lot of people treated (or ignored) her...I don't think I can pin it down on one thing. I guess you would call it a trigger? But I don't personally relate to the specific issues in Cassie's life. It's just that the feeling of the episode was all-around unsafe. That's as well as I can explain it, which isn't much. Do you understand, though? :/
I do like Cassie. I haven't seen enough to really love any character yet, but my favorites are Jal and Chris. Sid's close behind. As for the Stonems, Tony's quite the prick (though it seems like Skins can make me adore almost anyone, given enough time, so - we'll see), and I don't know anything about Effy yet, as she's only showed up two short times: 1) Her first appearance in 1x01, coming back home from God only knows where, and 2) the little sitting room scene where Jal is waiting for Tony and Michelle to stop eating face (oh man), and Effy makes the blowjob sign, then stares blankly into space. So only time will tell how I feel about either of them. I really hope I like them, though, as their importance in the show means my enjoyment of it is pretty much riding on whether I do or not.
Isn't the whole show full of little mindfucks, though? As for one an episode-long...I'll brace myself. Was it a good or bad sort of mindfuck, though? I mean, did it agree with you? Or was it rather Hitchcockian?
I'd read a bit about the Cassie angst, so yep. I think I'll just brace myself for angst where the whole show is concerned, never mind which character.
That happened to me with Nick's episode as well. It really shocked. I don't know how they did it! I went straight from hating to loving him. Whereas with Mini, for example? Man, it took me all of Series 5 and then some extra time to like her. The novel helped. I really had to warm up to her. But Nick, nah, it look all of forty-five minutes. I think it had to do with the bullying Mini did. Eh.
I can see myself shipping Tony/Sid. And I will almost definitely be shipping Tony/Effy, no matter how I feel about them.
Ah, okay. It's fucked, but in a way that you can't help but LIKE, even if it messes with your head. That doesn't happen to me often, but I get it.
Most of the Stonemcest subtext that the fandom rides on comes from that episode
Funny thing, though. I remember, a few years back, seeing someone using an icon from that episode - it had Tony carrying Effy, I think - and I just remember thinking, "This looks like my kind of show. I could get into that. I wonder if people ship them together. Is that the one girl that all the fans go crazy about, though, or am I mistaking it for someone else? His sister, yeah?" And what the photo looked like stuck with me. So I found the screenshot just now, and this was it:
Yeahhh. I am so glad that this isn't a fandom that judges for incest pairings. IT IS DIFFICULT TO SHIP SIBLINGS IN OTHER SHOWS AND KNOW THAT NO ONE WILL LIKE IT. SEE: CHARMED. (The "gross, they're related!! zomg u pervert looking for sex everywhere, u dont understand their special family bond/you must not have siblings/etc" reactions I can deal with. It's the total lack of fic in an incest-less fandom that I have a hard time with.)
I think I will go watch 1x05 now. Looking forward to transliterating stuff/figuring out words in background shots when they go to Russia. I know the alphabet and want to learn the language. So yeah.
Also, I might begin to ship Michelle/Effy later on. Does anyone ship that? Am I alone in this?
