Just updated my interests, ie, I actually added some. So, if anyone actually wanted to know the weird stuff I like, they could look now on my profile. Beware though, the list keeps getting longer, as I keep thinking of things I forgot to put in it.
Picked up a copy of Nobody Nowhere by Donna Williams in a second hand book shop in Beaumont Street(the cafe` strip near here) for $6 on Thursday. Finished it the other day. I enjoyed it a lot. Though I'm not Asperger's or autistic, I could identify a lot with the pleasure of getting lost on one's own mind from unpleasantness, and the nasty jolt it gives when you're forced to return.
Nobody Nowhere was the second book I've read written by someone with a form of Asperger's or high-functioning autism about their experiences. The first was Life Behind Glass: A Personal Account of Autism Spectrum Disorder by Wendy Lawson. Both were written by Australians, oddly enough. Neither was diagnosed correctly until they were adults.
Wendy was diagnosed with just about everything from retardation to schizophrenia to post-natal depression throughout her life, before someone actaully gave a damn and took the time to work with her.
(I think so anyway, if I remember correctly - I read it about six months ago. Was a fascinating read, that I do remember.)
Donna copped a childhood of abuse, both physical and verbal, at the hands of her family, then a young adulthood of use and abuse by people who just wanted a person who knew how to play the submissive partner. She was also told she was schizophrenic, until she actually read up and discovered descriptions of autism and found it fitted her world. She wrote about her experiences, and a shrink read them and confirmed her self-diagnosis.
I'm looking forward to reading Somebody Somewhere and her other books, as Nobody kind of ended once diagnosis was made and she started her work with autistic children. I'd like to know where her life went from then.
So, it goes on my list of 'to read' books, which is already three miles long, along with Garth Nix's new book, Mister Monday which appeared in shops a couple of days ago. I'm desperate to know if it's as good as his Old Kingdom trilogy!
