January recs (belated)
Apologies for the delay - I've been overwhelmed with family emergency stuff, so this month's list is a little short and a week late. Hope you enjoy them all anyway. Avengers things plus one Miss Fisher rec.

He hates this - the waiting and the hoping. And he’s expected to do both because he’s Captain America, but all Steve Rogers wants to do is punch Hydra in the collective face for scraping up the vestiges of his friend just to haunt him.
Steve goes looking for Bucky, but the Winter Soldier finds him first. Steve isn't exactly qualified to deal with the neurotic mess that is his oldest friend, but he'll try his damndest. In the meantime, Hydra has other plans for Steve, plans that involve someone who looks remarkably like Bucky.

He was tall and broad-shouldered, with, as Sam saw as he got closer, sparkling blue eyes and bright gold hair sticking out from under a red knit cap. He held out a large plate that wobbled alarmingly under the weight of an enormous pyramid of chocolate chip cookies. "Hi," the guy said, and under the bright Arctic sun, his white-toothed grin was literally blinding. "I'm Steve. I'm the head of the welcoming committee."
Of course you are, Sam thought.

Steve has no plan. Not because he hadn't tried to make one. He'd tried to make lots of plans. Plan, adapt, plan again, tried to think of every contingency.
And then he'd thrown them away, because there wasn't much point. What could you plan for? He couldn't guess the possible contingencies, the situations, the potentials. And he sure as sure hadn't figured on what's happened now, on coming back to his place and finding Bucky here. He hadn't even hoped for that.
He hadn't realized he could.

This series is linked to my your blue-eyed boys and (even if i could) make a deal with god, and explores both Sam's pov of same and also other things Sam is doing in his own life. Also apparently the same for Maria. I wish stories would tell me these things before I start writing them.
I read the initial stories a long time ago, probably not long after posting, but it's only now that I've finally caught up with the ongoing, interconnected series of shortfic Feather has developed since. What began as a wonderful post-WS story has become a broad, beautiful canvas, filled with deep, complex relationships and OCs every bit as rich as the canon characters. What Feather does so well is the every-day ins and outs, and her work is a masterstudy in living with, around and through complex PTSD. Bucky's trauma evolves and changes as he does, and as Feather reminds us - it's a spiral, not a straight road to recovery. Read this in little bites if that's how you like it, or in one glut if you want the enormity of the impact of the verse all at once. And though the initial story arc is marked as complete, the three short-story collections are ongoing, so be sure to bookmark them so that you don't miss the next installment.

Between trying to get used to a new world, and new people, they both have to learn that not all relationships are equal and soulmates doesn't always mean happily ever after.
