Sherlock Rec Post - Modern retellings of ACD stories!

I'm sure since the series started airing, all sorts of new and interesting fics have been posted. But what about some old fics? There were some incredible stories written using the modern setting and ACD canon in the last year. Here's a few you should revisit.
* The Cornish Horror by

“Please,” the woman begged tearfully. “You have to help me. I don’t have anywhere else to go.” Her grief, thank God, was at least restrained to subtle tremors and glistening eyes. Sherlock wasn’t sure what he would have done if she had begun outright sobbing or, heaven forbid, reached out to touch him in some form of supplication.
Sorry, the words hung sluggishly at the end of his tongue, we’re not in the “helping people” business, anymore. Which was a lie; he hadn’t been in the “helping people” business to *start* with.

Three years after Moriarty and The Great Game, John is in danger and Sherlock must return from the dead.

* Bricoleur by

A loose retelling of "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton" in which Harry, newly separated and struggling to get sober, is the one who's being blackmailed for a drunken hit-and-run. John needs Sherlock to solve the case, but not if he's going to prove Harry's guilty. Set a few months after "The Great Game," while the boys are still recovering. ("Bricoleur" means "one who uses all that he has to do what he has to do.")
(This is another big bang fic with art.)
* The Adventure of the Spotted Ring by buffyaddict13 SPEC
John blogs about the Adventure of the Spotted Ring, in which there is: a frightened client, a mysterious sound, a dead twin, an angry giant, a crumbling house, a large safe, and imminent danger.
* The Adventure of the Girl in the Attic by buffyaddict13 COPP
Dr. John Watson writes up an account of the Adventure of the Girl in the Attic, in which there is: a certain amount of boredom, a worried woman, nail polish, a strange performance, a locked room, a desperate rescue, a deadly dog, and an injured detective.
* The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle by solsticezero BLUE
A modernization of The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, sort of. No geese were harmed or mentioned in the making of this fic. A jewel is stolen on Christmas Eve. John and Sherlock play at being the Grinch.
