Ruthless government agent Amanda Waller hatches a plan to recruits dangerous criminals to go on missions for the government. Her villains of choice include hitman Deadshot, former psychologist-turned-Joker-henchwoman Harley Quinn, Aussie Rogue Captain Boomerang , as well as Killer Croc, Slipknot and ancient witch Enchantress. Waller assigns command of the squad to Colonel Rick Flag, who also happens to have feelings for the woman who Enchantress has possessed. Waller soon gets her chance to show what the Suicide squad can do as an ancient magical threat emerges in Midway City. This magical threat isn't the only problem the team will have to deal with as the Joker is also lurking about and wants his girlfriend back.
My opinion on this movie was rather cooled since I first saw it at the cinema. I probably would have given the movie a good score back then as I was still riding high after seeing it. Now I would prorably say that watching it was a fair experience. It wasn't excellent, but then again, I didn't think the movie deserves as much hate as it has been getting.
I quite liked Jared Leto as the Joker, but after some time to think about it, much about the character makes me cringe. This isn't helped by the stories of Leto's method acting behind the scenes. The 'damaged' tattoo on his forehead was rather on-the-nose as well. It's like he is trying too hard to be edgy. It's the same reason why I'm wary about the new Aquaman in the upcoming Justice League movie. It's like the people behind the DC movies are trying too hard to be edgy and cool.
There is much about the movie that I did like. Most of the acting was pretty decent. Well, the characters that I cared about anyway. I only really wanted to see Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang and I wasn't disappointed. They were probably my favourite parts of the movie. Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney were all great. That's right, I'm actually praising Jai Courtney! His Captain Boomerang was an utter scumbag, and I loved it.
Deadshot and Harley Quinn got most of the backstory, but I'm fine with that as they were the characters I was most interested in. I look forward to seeing more from Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in the Gotham City Sirens movie. I can't wait to see who gets to play Poison Ivy. I would happily watch more of Will Smith as Deadshot because hey, who doesn't like Will Smith?
