After being captured by Tony Stark and various other heroes, the Hulk is shot into space. Stark and the others have decided that the Hulk is just too dangerous to remain on Earth and plan to send him to an uninhabited planet. of course, the Hulk isn't best pleased and smashes his spaceship, which sends it off-course and crash lands on the planet Sakarr, which is very much inhabited. Weakened by his joruney through a wormhole, the Hulk is subsequently captured by the locals and forced to become a gladiator in the arena.
Obviously, this animated film was based on the popular storyline of the same name. I haven't read this particular storyline in the comics, but watching this film makes me want to now.
The film was much better than the last straight-to-DVD film I saw featuring the Hulk. Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United was dumbed-down family-friendly guff. This film was much more violent. Definitely not for the little ones. Most of the blood shed was brightly-coloured alien blood, but I was still surprised at just how violent the film was.
The film obviously changed certain things from the original comics. The Hulk ended up facing the Silver Surfer in the comics, but due to writes issues we get Beta Ray Bill instead. I guess that is why No-Name the Brood was left out of the film as well. I believe 20th Century Fox owns the rights to X-Men chacaters.
There are also a bunch of cameos for eagle-eyed viewers to spot. Look out for appearances from Gamora, Pip the Troll, Star-Lord and Adam Warlock sitting in the audience.
Unlike the comics, the film ends on a happy note. The Hulk ends up becoming the ruler of Sakarr and presumably marrying Caiera. The Hulk didn't end up getting a happy ending in the comics as the spaceship that brought him to Sakarr exploded, destroying the city and killing his new wife. he then headed back to Earth to give Tony Stark and the other heroes a damn good smashing. I guess that means we won't be getting an animated adaption of World War Hulk then.
Three and a half pointy hats.
