Movie Reviews: Wedding Crashers

Jan 10, 2014 20:24

John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) are partners in a Washington D.C. law firm who con their way into weddings to sleep with women. Jeremy spots the wedding of the daughter Secretary of the Treasury William Cleary (Christopher Walken). After infiltrating the wedding claiming to be distant relatives, John falls for another one of the Secretary's daughters, Claire (Rachel McAdams), while Jeremy ends up with the clingy third daughter, Gloria (Isla Fisher). John and Jeremy are subsequently invited to spend the weekend with the Cleary family where they encounter such things as a racist grandma, and unfortunate hunting accident and Claire's asshole boyfriend, Sack (Bradley Cooper).

One of the main problems I had with this film was that I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to root for the main characters or not. Sure, they aren't total bastards like Sack, but they basically con their way into bed with pretty women. Thankfully, both John and Jeremy eventually learn the error of the ways.

The Cleary family are one messed up lot. Apart from the racist grandma, there is Secretary Cleary's wife Kathleen (Jane Seymour) who comes on to John and the moody teenage son who comes on to Jeremy after Gloria has tied him to the bed. The family must be pretty messed up if they make Christopher Walken looks like the normal one.

For a villain in a comedy movie, Sack gets away with a surprising little punishment. He is a victim of a laxative prank early on in the movie, but he ends up the movie with little more than a punch in the face. He did end up losing his girlfriend to Jeremy though, so I guess it's not too bad.

Three pointy hats.
