Movie reviews: The Amazing Spider-Man

My sister gave me the DVD for my birthday so I thought I might as well review it too.

Another retelling of Spider-Man's origin. For those of you that don't know, Spider-Man's real name is Peter Parker. Peter becomes Spider-Man when he is bitten by a genetically-engineered spider and his inactivity during a robbery at a convenience store leads to the death of his beloved Uncle Ben. also, peter must contend with his growing crush on the lovely Gwen Stacy and a former partner of his father who has turned himself into a giant lizard.

Andrew Garfield stars as Peter/Spidey, Emma Stone as Gwen, Martin Sheen and Sally Fields as Uncle Ben and Aunt May, Denis Leary as Captain Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard.

Well, this is more like it. A breath of fresh air after the massive pile of pooh that was Silent Night, Deadly Night- Part 2. Then again, being poked in the eye is a breath of fresh air after that stinker.

I honestly can't think of anything bad about this movie. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone had much more chemistry than Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. So much chemistry that they got together in real life. Yes, Andrew Garfield is actually dating Emma Stone now. Lucky bastard. Rhys Ifans underplays his role as Dr. Connors and doesn't go completely bat-shit mental until he turns himself into the Lizard. denis Leary makes a badass Captain Stacy. His stand-off against the Lizard was just awesome. Martin Sheen and Sally Fields were gear as Uncle Ben and Aunt May too. Although, I did find it a little weird to see such a young Aunt May.

I know that people have been going on about how dumb the CGI Lizard looked, but I didn't think it looked that bad. I was quite impressed. Look at it this way, at least the Lizard didn't look as goofy as the Green Goblin from the first movie.

Stan Lee's cameo was the best one yet and arguably the funniest moment of the movie. He is pottering about in the library listening to music on his headphones while Spidey and the Lizard smash the place up behind him. All we can hear is the music on Stan's headphones.

I did find that Peter was a little too awkward around Gwen, however. I know that he is supposed to be a socially awkward nerd but he seemed to have a genuine problem. Gwen wasn't too awkward. She only acted a little goofy around peter. Young love will do that to you, I guess.

The movie was supposed to delve into the mystery behind the deaths of Peter's parents, but all we got were vague hints about Peter's father participating in some sort of mysterious experiments. Hopefully the sequel will explain more.

Four and a half pointy hats.
