Clint Eastwood takes the lead role as Lt. Kelly, an American soldier who discovers the location of 16 million dollars worth of gold being guarded in enemy territory. Feeling unappreciated by his own army, and being continually denied any decent R&R, Kelly decides to head deep into enemy territory and steal the gold. With the aid of a tank commander named Oddball (played by Donald Sutherland) and his bunch of misfits, a greedy supply officer, and eventually the very Germans they are supposed to be fighting, Kelly and his men might just succeed.
This movie was rather different from the previous war movies I had previously seen. This one was rather more of a comedy than a serious war movie. You really feel sorry for Kelly and his men. The movie starts with them being shelled by their own men! Then their commanding officer lectures them on looting when he is making off with a yacht!
There was a lot of good characters in this movie, but my favourite must have been Donald Sutherland as Oddball. He might have been a filthy hippie and had and accent that I couldn't quite make out, but he had most of the funniest moments. I'm not sure what his accent was exactly. Was it Canadian? New York? I'm just not sure. Clint Eastwood didn't seem to get many funny moments unfortunately. I guess he's better at generally being a badass and shooting the enemy.
Quite an enjoyable war movie, this. Three and a half pointy hats.
Next time: It's time for some 80's cheesiness with Jean-Claude Van Damme kicking a bunch of people in Kickboxer!
