Movie reviews: Force 10 from Navarone
Indiana Jones, Apollo Creed and Jaws from the Bond movies in a war movie together? No, really!
Mallory and Miller are back from their mission to the island of Navarone and have mysteriously changed into Robert Shaw and Edward Fox. It turns out that there was a traitor with them on their mission. They thought that the traitor was executed, but not only is the man still alive. it turns out that he was a German agent. Mallory and Miller are assigned to eliminate him. They are to join with a unit called Force 10, whose mission it is to destroy a heavily-fortified dam controlled by the enemy.
I preferred this movie to the previous one. It was significantly more star-studded (in my eyes at least) and had less cynical British bullshit. The roles of Mallory and Miller were played by Gregory Peck and David Niven in the original, but the roles were recast for this movie. Harrison Ford played Lt. Col. Barnaby, the leader of the Force 10 team. Yes, Indiana Jones was messing with the Nazis before he even became Indiana Jones. Carl Weathers played Weaver, a US Army sergeant who gets swept up into the mission. Richard Kiel (most famously known as jaws from the James Bond movies) played Captain Drazak, an enemy collaborator. Barbara Bach played Maritza, Force 10's ally with the Yugoslavian partisans. Michael Sheard (Mr. Bronson from Grange Hill) played a Nazi again.
This movie was rather more explosive than the previous movie as well. Instead of a comical exploding rat, this movie had exploding dog dirt. No, really.
There's quite a bit more action in this movie. Some of it was quite shocking. One such moment was when the team strung piano wire across a road which subsequently decapitated a passing enemy tank driver.
Another favourite moment was the knife fight between Weaver and Drazak. Yes, Apollo Creed had a knife fight with Jaws from the Bond movies. It was awesome!
Oh, Barbara Bach was in the nuddy too.
A solid four out of five pointy hats.
Next time: The Cabin in the Woods. I was due to review Hellraiser, but I decided to put that on hold and watch this one instead.
