By J.M. DeMatteis and co. Collecting Captain America #290-301.
The Red Skull is dying and wants to take Captain America with him. He joins forces with Baron Helmut Zemo and starts attacking those closest and dearest to Cap.
This one was a bit of a let down. You'd expect a suitably explosive death for Cap's nemesis, but the Red Skull just peters out. While he had Cap imprisoned, the Red Skull injected him with poison before he did the same to his self. That's how the Red skull meets his end. Yeah. Disappointing, really. Obviously, we all know now that this wasn't the end for the Red Skull. I think he came back with a body cloned from Cap himself. Or was that another time he died? I forget.
Of course, instead of just killing Cap outright, the Red Skull takes the time to tell Cap his origin story. The Red Skull's real name is Johann Shmidt, a poor German orphan. his mother died during childbirth and his father subsequently lost his mind before he killed himself. Shmidt drifted through life until he became bellboy at a Berlin hotel. One day Shmidt was doing his rounds when he happened on Hitler berating one of his lackeys for losing a spy. Hitler claimed he could teach a lowly bellboy to do a better job than he lackeys, and the rest is pretty much history.
There's also romance in the cards for Cap. Bernie Rosenthal was her name, I think. She seemed nice. She and Cap almost got married. I wonder what happened to her. Anybody on my f-list care to help, or will I just wiki her name?
Not really an essential read unless you're a Captain America fan.
