Comic book reviews: Thor Visionaries- Walter Simonson Vol. 3

As promised, here is my review of part of one of the most fondly regarded runs on Thor.

This trade collects issues 360-369 of The Mighty Thor from 1985/1986. There are a variety of stories in this one. Firstly, Thor and his allies return to Asgard from an adventure on earth and discover that Hela, Goddess of Death, has captured the souls of mortals. of course, Thor won't stand for that and leads his allies on a journey to Hel to bring back the mortal souls. Also tagging along is Thor's former foe, Skurge the Executioner. Growing fed up of being a laughing stock and repeatedly being spurned by the Enchatress, Skurge takes it upon himself to make the ultimate sacrifice. He knocks out Thor and takes his place guarding the bridge Gjallerbru so that Thor and the others can make their escape when Hela sends the denizens of Hel to stop them.

Don't believe how epic it is? Just check it out for yourselves!

For those of you that are wondering, Thor and co picked up the guns on the aforementioned adventure to Earth. Thor has his faced covered because previously, in a battle with Hela, his face was seriously scarred.

The next story of interest is a tie-in to Secret Wars II. The Beyonder sics a nigh-unstoppable being known as Kurse on Thor. Thor barely defeats Kurse with the aid of Beta Ray Bill and Power Pack.

Next is a little bit of silliness when Loki turns Thor into a frog. No, really. Odin seemingly perished Surtur a few issues previous and Asgard is about to choose its new ruler. Obviously, Loki wants to rule himself and tries to get Thor our of the way. Before the Frog of Thunder can return to Asgard however, he gets embroiled in a turf war between warring factions of frogs and rats. Seriously. I am not making this up.

Finally there's some nonsense with the return of Kurse and a bunch of trolls or whatever. This collection is mostly about Skurge's last stand and frog Thor, so yeah. Oh! There's also a cute little look into Volstagg's family life. His daughter Hildy has quite an important role in returning Thor to his normal form. I won't spoil the rest for you, but any of my f-list who are fans of the Thor comic would know what I'm talking about any way.

Walter Simonson is rightly regarded as one of the best to have ever written Thor. As I mentioned before, you delve into the lives of some of the other characters instead of just focusing on the title character. I like it when minor characters share the limelight. This trade is definitely worth a look. Hell, read Simonson's whole run if you can. You won't be disappointed.

Next time: Avengers- Under Siege. Baron Zemo gathers a new Masters of Evil and storms Avengers Mansion to take revenge on the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
