I dont remember if it was KOMO or KING tv news that did a random survey on the street regarding this, asking people if they knew what GOP stood for. most everyone knew it was Grand Old Party, but somehow they didnt know that it referred to the Republican party. it was pretty stunning to me, but there were a lot of people. and this was on the streets of Seattle, where people are supposed to be all uber-intelligent and edumacated.
I mean really though, the party is the Republican party, and GOP is a frickin nickname. it's an official ballot, not somebody's blog.
On a somewhat related note, I've noticed that a lot of the Democrats running in my area this year have the word "Democrat" displayed prominently on their signs, and NONE of the Republicans have done the same. This is the first time for as long as I can remember when I've seen this.

If I were a Republican running for office this year, especially in Washington (and New Hampshire, for that matter), I wouldn't want to remind everyone that I am a Republican! I have noticed Republican candidates here don't put REPUBLICAN on their lawn signs. Democrats don't usually put DEMOCRAT on their signs. But, that is because we have been in the minority for years and years - at least since I have been alive. Now, we are close to the Republicans in registration and control both Houses of the state legislature plus the Governor's office.
