Some Comfort?

Today, my thoughts were with VA Tech.

Yesterday, I heard the news only in passing and did not dwell on it.  Today, I spent most of my day scouring the news, reading about it.  We talked about it in bio, we had a moment of silence in chem and at the end of the Circle K meeting.  We made ribbons at Circle K, red and orange (I couldn't find maroon...).  So little for such a great tragedy.

But although we have had to listen and watch, sickened, as this devastation unfolded, I have been privileged to listen and watch as my generation, an entire nation of college students, comes together to offer support and condolences to our fellow students--our fellow humans--at VA Tech.  Their campus is a campus like ours; their students are young people like us, on the edge of the rest of their life.  We cannot begin to comprehend how they feel now, at this terrible moment, but we can try to help them carry the burden.  We are banding together, shouldering the load as one unit, not as disconnected individuals from hundreds of different schools, but as people--as students--as humans.

Today, my thoughts were with VA Tech...may such a tragedy never repeat.  As we come together in shocked mourning, let us also come together in firm resolve to eradicate this senseless violence, at least from our generation and our schools.  We have seen, repeatedly, the horrific outcome of these crimes...Columbine, 9/11, the D.C. sniper, now we add VA Tech...if we can come together so powerfully to grieve, can we not also come together so profoundly to act, to prevent such abominable destruction?
