There's a dog around the corner who is always roaming around without a leash. (County law is that animals must be restrained.) The dog barks at everything, and is generally annoying (to me and other neighbors).
Today, we walked by the house to go down to the forest. I checked to see if the dog was there so we could cross the street. Didn't see the dog, so we kept going. Of course, then the dog comes charging out, coming within about 3-4 inches of Jacob before our yelling got it to back off. Jacob was freaked out, as was his friend who was walking with us.
I pounded on the neighbor's door, but got no answer. Jacob's friend's mom came out to see what was up, since she'd heard the screams of the kids. A few other neighbors saw the whole thing, too.
A couple of minutes later, the owner came outside and he and I got into a yell fest. The dude had the nerve to claim he had no idea the dog was getting free. (Right. ALL of the neighbors know this, and many have talked to him about it before.) He swore at me a bit, and I called animal control.
I'm going to program animal control into my cell phone and call any other time I see the dog out. But I hope I don't have to make those calls. I know I will, though. Some people don't really deserve to have pets.
