From a fandom point of view, I feel rather uncomfortable about
this legislation which is looking set to be brought in.
Let me get this straight. I am not a paedophile nor do I condone any abuse of children. But... I have been known to look at art which may involve underage characters portrayed having sex. I'm sure I've seen the odd Harry/Draco where they are both under 16. Maybe they were 15 and 364 days. Maybe they were 13. I haven't checked.
I have also read fics which have involved underage children having sex. Indeed, I have read many of them, and have even written some. Does this mean I want to see it happen in real life? Does this mean I have any intention of carrying out abuse on children? NO. You know what? I can tell the difference between fantasy and reality.
I also have been known to read about non-con sex, about bestiality - heck, about torture and murder. Does it mean that I condone any of these things, that I want to see any of these things happen in real life? NO.
I agree: there should be laws against actual images of real child abuse being manipulated into formats that are not at present illegal.
But... if you can draw pictures of people killing real children, and that's okay, but you can't draw pictures of imaginary children in sexual situations... isn't there something wrong there? Murder is okay but sex isn't? Or, can people tell the difference when it comes to murder but not when it comes to sex? Am I missing something here?
I object to people suggesting even by implication that I might be a paedophile, that I might ever do anything to hurt children; that what I look at makes me morally reprehensible and legally a criminal. It is simply not true.
I thought about friendslocking this. I thought about filtering it. I decided not to. Why? Because I think it's important to demonstrate that ordinary normal people care about issues like this. People like me.
