Joseph (musical)
G
The brothers have rediscovered Joseph. It falls to one to tell their father.

"Run that past me again." Dad's face was grim.

Why did I always get picked for jobs like this? Reuben was the oldest - how come I, Zeb, got to give the explanations? I gulped.

"Um... You know we told you Joseph was dead?"

"Yes, Zebulum. I am not losing my mind so much that I've forgotten the death of my favourite son."

It still grated after all these years, that 'favourite son' business. I know, I know, it shouldn't - but it bloody did.

"Yeah, him."

I'd thought I might like Joe this time around, but if Dad was going to go on about him, I could feel my old grievances rising up to poke me in the guts.

"Yes?"

"Well..." This was the difficult bit. "It... um... turns out he's still alive and is second in command to Pharoah in Egypt. Isn't that great news?"

"Alive?" Dad looked vulnerable all of a sudden. "You're sure?" he asked pathetically.

I nodded.

Old Dad reappeared.

"In that case, would you mind explaining how the Hell you thought he'd died?"

Ah yes. That would take a bit of explaining. Maybe if I said it fast...?

"Well actually Dad, we never did think he'd died. We sold him as a slave because he pissed us off," I said hurriedly.

Sometimes it's good to have ten brothers on your side. Dad came close to having a (different) dead son after that. Thank God Simeon's twice his size.

Yes.

Note to readers: if you sell of a sibling, don't discover him in a position of power years later. It only leads to trouble.
