My father joined the Air Force during the Korean War, not because he wanted to go there (and he didn't), but because he wanted a college education and that was the only way he figured he could get one. As it turned out, he ended up, after the Air Force paid for both a batchelor and master's degrees, being one of the first computer programmers they had. He stayed in for 20 years, and then had a very lucrative career working for Boeing for another 17 years. Yes, with the current situation, you are likely to end up going to the Middle East, but, depending on your MOS, you will most likely be ok. If you like, I can put you in touch with a friend of mine who has done several tours in Iraq in the Air Force.
The military has always been an alternative for poor people. Remember, make that recruiter work for you, and get everything they promise in writing.
Also, from a friend who the military would not LET re-up, because he gave this advice to everyone under his command: Buy the military life insurance. Buy as much as you can beg or borrow money for. He said that the military moved his whole command out of a combat zone after someone realized their combined value at death was a significant fraction of the national debt.

Damned GED. I don't see why they don't accept it, when over and over they find that most high-school graduates can't pass the damned thing,
