Dr. Death visited yesterday

My 18 year old cat Balthazar was put to sleep yesterday. After nearly a week of not eating and not grooming himself, he was ready for the long sleep. I made the appointment for the traveling vet, as I didn't want my sweet man to go through the trauma of dying in a place other than home.
I worked half a day, then came home to spend the last hour and half with B. I took him outside and we sat in the warmth of this mid-autumn season on our neighbors steps, where he loved to sun himself. Then we went back in side. He was so tired. So was I. I hadn't slept peacefully for nearly a week myself. I made him a comfortable bed on our bed and laid next to him. He really wasn't into being touched, but he let me stroke his ears and underneath his chin. His eyes were glazed over, but his ears still perked up when I called his name or made a bird whistle.
The vet came and sedated him immediately. Balthazar's body finally relaxed and I stroked his fur and talked to him as he settled into his blanket. Then his front paw was shaved to expose a vein and the sleepy syrup was injected into his vein. It was less than thirty seconds and he was finally at peace.
He was buried behind our house with Alicia, Matt and Karla there as well. Even his brother Simon knew, and sat near us during the impromptu service.
R.I.P. my sweetest boy.
