I was in my (last ever) English Curriculum class today and we were discussing the perception of class based on the job you do. There is much snobbery, especially around the university, that glorifies education and lowers tradespeople. They might be rude because their job doesn't challenge them and they don't feel fulfilled by giving up 8 hours a day for low pay and it has nothing at all to do with the customers. But I also agree with you that they get beaten down by rude customers. I don't agree with your mom because I think when a customer is rude it is their own personal issue, maybe they had a bad day, maybe they think they are entitled to grrrreat service, or other reasons. I think it would be rare for customers to be rude because some years ago someone at the cashier didn't ask "how are you?".

As for the first thing, I'm sort of guilty of glorifying education over people working in trade. I try not to be presumptious. But university is all about teaching you a way to think critically. Of course there are lots of students who graduate and take nothing more from their education besides a fancy job and "one time I was so drunk" stories. But other people learn a whole new way complicated way of seeing the world that is much more difficult to learn on our own!
