(gahh setup chapter. The next one is going to be exciting.)

After the kiss the first week passed without event. Mohinder chose not to say anything to Gabriel about the kiss. He could tell Gabriel treated his silence as a relief and they fell into a comfortable understanding.

The first week was a haze of forgettable classrooms filled with boys in matching blues suits and matching personalities. Gabriel had three out of seven classes with him. They sat together in A.P. Social Studies. The class was taught by Hiro Nakamura's father who made Mohinder feel constantly judged as inadequate. When he saw Hiro squirming around at lunch smiling from ear to ear and yammering away in quick Japanese he couldn't figure out how he got that way.

The teachers all had a faux calm that grated on his nerves. Gabriel just shrugged when Mohinder told him and said, “Welcome to our school.” while turning a page in one of his books. He looked up slowly. “Met Thompson yet?” Mohinder shook his head and Gabriel smiled morbidly. “Well then you still have something to look forward to.” Gabriel laughed softly in the way he only allowed himself to when Mohinder was around but his eyes looked a little worried.

“Whose Thompson?”

“I've always thought it was funny Mohinder, that the boys that come here never even know who owns the school...”

Two days after that Mohinder finally had the pleasure of meeting Thompson.

Mohinder woke up 20 minutes after first period started in a panic. He practically fell out bed with the sheets tangled around his legs. He jumped away from them toward the closet and threw his uniform on as fast as he could. He bolted out of the room while tugging his jacket on. His hair was covering his face and absolutely out of control. He brushed it back with his hands absently as he raced from the dorms to the main building. He swung his messenger bag over his shoulders as he headed down a flight of stairs taking them two at a time. He scrambled into the main building and made a beeline for the social studies hall. His stomach was grumbling from the lack of breakfast but he pushed that out of his mind. He was only a few doors away from his classroom when he felt himself collide with a solid chest and fall backwards. A hand came up and grabbed his shoulder to keep him steady.

“Oh I'm sorry!” He managed as he looked up and met cold eyes.

“Hello. I'm Thompson. I don't believe I have met you yet.”

“No, we haven't.” Mohinder shifted to the side a little. “I'm Mohinder Suresh.” He knew Thompson would already know that but he couldn't think of anything else to say.

“Hmm.” Thompson stepped forward and Mohinder stepped back. “How are you enjoying your stay here?”

“You make it sound like a hotel.” Mohinder stepped to the side again and moved passed Thompson. “I'm late.” He stumbled forward and turned his back on Thompson. He felt a cold smile on his bad as he flung open the classroom door.

As soon as he was in the classroom though he wished he had chosen differently. Nakamura slammed the textbook he had been holding onto his desk and turned on his heels to stare down Mohinder. “What do you think gives you the right to be late to this class Mr. Suresh?”

Mohinder cast a wary glance toward Gabriel and sighed. “I'm sorry. I over slept and -”

“It was my fault!” Gabriel jumped out of his chair. It fell over with a clatter and the room went silent. Nakamura turned his glare on Gabriel.

“Sit down Mr. Gray.”

Gabriel shook his head. “No.” he took a deep breath and tried to sound defiant. Nakamura narrowed his eyes. Gabriel could feel his resolve crumble. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Mohinder make a move to stand near him but Nakamura held his arm out and wouldn't let Mohinder pass.

“Both of you - out of my classroom now.”

Gabriel gathered up his things quickly and headed for the front of the room. He grabbed Mohinder by the arm and pulled him out of the door. He slammed the door before falling against the wall and rubbing his eyes. “I'm sorry Mohinder.” He mumbled. “For not waking you up... For getting you kicked out of class.” He pounded his fists against the wall. “Sorry.”

Mohinder put a hand on Gabriel's shoulder. He pulled him off the wall and steered him out of the main building. “It's alright Gabriel. Really.” He put his arm around Gabriel's shoulder and gave him a comforting smile. “Thanks for standing up for me.” He liked the way Gabriel felt under his arm.

Gabriel laughed weakly. “I thought he was going to kill me.”

Mohinder looked down at his watch. “We have forty minutes until 2nd period.”

“Wanna go back to our room?”

Mohinder shrugged. “Sure. I need to regroup.” He laughed. “I met Thompson today.” He confided. He dropped his arm from Gabriel's shoulder.

“Oh god, did I mention I was sorry for today?” Gabriel tried to laugh but it came out thin. “Did he scare you? He scared me the first time I met him.”

They wandered down the path that lead to the dorms occasionally bumping shoulders. Mohinder smiled at him softly. “Yeah a little bit. He is pretty unnerving.” Gabriel nodded and chewed on his bottom lip. “A lot of the people here are unnerving. It is seems to be a requirement if you want to teach at this place.”

Gabriel relaxed as he finally realized that Mohinder wasn't angry at him. “I must agree with you. Everyone here is short of...I don't know, off.”

They arrived at the door to the dorm. Gabriel fumbled with the handle for a moment before getting it open. Mohinder was standing a little closer to him then customary. He liked the warmth coming off of Mohinder. As soon as he shut the door he felt Mohinder's hands against his shoulder again. He leaned back into the touch a little bit.

“Hmm. You're warm.” Gabriel mumbled. A blush rose up in his face. Mohinder's arms circled around to Gabriel's front and pulled him back. They stood in the center of the room pressed together for a while. Gabriel rocked back and leaned his head against Mohinder's shoulder.

“I think I like you Gabriel.” He whispered against Gabriel's neck. He almost didn't want to admit it out loud.

Gabriel shut his eyes. “I...that might not be such a good thing.” He pushed Mohinder's arms off of him. He turned around slowly to face him. Brushing a curl away from Mohinder's face he sighed deeply. “But I like you too.”

“What about Zane?”

Gabriel laughed a little bitterly. “Zane... Zane's just a musician.”

`~`~`~

Mohinder made sure to get to his next class on time. He had American Literature with Peter Petrelli. He liked Peter well enough but sometimes his naive smile and trusting nature bothered Mohinder.

Peter slipped into his chair beside Mohinder and leaned over. He gave him a bright smile. “Hiya. Hear you got kicked out of Nakamura's class today.”

Mohinder nodded politely. “That is the rumor.”

Peter slumped back in his chair grinning. “He's a bit of a hard ass.” Peter paused. “Okay. He actually scares the shit out of me.” Mohinder let out a small laugh and relaxed into his chair. “So, Other then that how do you like here?”

Mohinder shrugged slightly. “It's alright. Different from what I am used to but alright.”

A serious expression flashed over Peter's face. “How do you get along with Gabriel?”

Mohinder looked down at his hands. “We get along well. Why do you ask?”

“Well...” Peter shifted in his chair. He gave Mohinder a funny look and tried to smile again. “I don't know. Gabriel's nice but sometimes...when you talk to him he seems a little... It's like he isn't there, you know? Like, you are talking to him and he sort of...goes off somewhere.” Peter searched Mohinder's face for understanding. “I dunno. Maybe its just me?” He shrugged.

“Maybe it is.”
