The Man in the Sea

Salt eaten sword and water-logged boots
Accompanied Long Beard with incredulous throat
Now be there lying upon his gaze
The whole horizon storms to claw at his face
Twelve ye'rs he had followed his great star of lore
And found many pleasures in self righteous wars
But here in this storm dear Mother did thrust
Her teeth through his hull to plunge him thus
Into Her bosom where he lushed his final drink.
And so he was swept into the sea
With all the gemstones he thought made he
And clutched to his chest a satchel of grief
Not of letters from home but of his penniless fee
For the cost of his life was what satisfied she
And if one could listen this man would weep
But a few tears in the ocean could not set him free
So he stood there and looked up at what light was not left
Not one last glimmer to ease him through death
Just the anxious hauling of his body to the depths
For around his feet tied was his ship of speed
Rushing him toward eternity.
