Vandals slapped the sleep from the eyes of Fort Belvoir recreation seekers Wednesday when it was discovered that the local Skate Park was molested with lewd and licentious defacements scrawled blatantly on the skate ramps. Is Fort Belvoir a breeding ground for mischief in juveniles?
Investigation of the crime and discovery of the perpetrators - it is believed that more than one individual committed the crime - of the night before commenced that day as military police investigators canvassed the surrounding area and began interviewing local Belvoir juveniles.
Costs of damages are yet to be determined, but the material used is thought to be an oil-based chemical - that didn’t wash completely away during the last rain, stated authorities.
An investigator with the Provost Marshals Office stated that they have already coordinated with Fairfax County Police in an attempt to link any other crimes, but it is thought that the perpetrators are local residents.
“These type of mischievousness are mostly crimes of opportunity,” said Dave Parchman, chief of military police investigations. “It’s not something they probably planned on doing, but they did it.”
Military police want to urge parents to be aware of where their children are and who the hang out with because, especially during the summer months, children have a lot of time on their hands and, given the right spark or urge, things like this can happen.
Investigating a crime is a methodical process, he continued. Every time someone is interviewed it can turn up new information with leads to another interview, but “there is definitely someone out there who knows exactly who did it.”
The military police feel they are close to apprehending the right perpetrators through their leads and gathered information; though, any help from Ft. Belvoir residents would be greatly appreciated to help expedite the process.
Consequences for these actions vary on how forthcoming the apprehended would be, according to military police investigators. If the perpetrators are cooperative, they will most likely be turned over to the Juvenile Review Board led by members on the installation. The price of restoration to the skate park would possibly also befall on the parents of the juveniles. The alternative is that they be referred to Fairfax County Juvenile Authorities that are usually stiffer on the punishment. If the perpetrator(s) is/are over 18, they would be judicated through the United States Magistrate Courts.
Again, any Belvoir residents with information pertaining to the Skate Park vandalism are urged to lend the military police investigators a hand.
