Lessons learned from 2011

It's best not to get into a prolonged estrangement with an elderly relative. You never know when that person will end up spending six months in and out of the hospital.

It's a good idea to spend time with relatives who you know are nearing the ends of their lives, even better if the time you spend with them is quality time, not time on your cell phone with the people back home.

Losing your heat in April can suck--even more when you're having a cold snap.

If your dishwasher is shorting out its circuit, it's time to replace it.

Ditto for your 14-year-old car.

Not going to camp isn't the end of the world...especially if you end up going anyway. ;)

Working in an orchard is a nice way to spend a fall day. Especially if you can find shade.

Mice are cute, except when they're rummaging through your drawers at 1 AM.

Starved Rock is a lovely place to visit, provided it's not 90F and humid. Also, bring comfortable shoes.

And finally (for now), no matter how old she gets, your bird can provide much amusement and enjoyment.

Happy New Year, everyone.

year in review, new year's eve
