While I didn't end up getting a camera for my birthday, it's entirely possible I could get one for Christmas...that is, if I give my dad specifics on what I want. My dad was looking at spending less than $200; this may or may not be a moot point by now. I'd maybe push it up to $250.
My only experience is with AA rechargeables, so while sometimes it seems like the batteries don't hold a charge, the ones I use are also older, plus I don't doubt that my old camera sucks the juice right out of them. My dad's camera (he has a nicer sort of mini-DSLR Canon) also runs on batteries and he prefers that; Laura has dealt with both. That is nice to know that you like having the lithium battery. My only concern is having the batteries run out and not having a backup set ready to go. Sometimes I take a ton of pictures; sometimes, I hardly touch my camera.
No lag--that's a good point. What's frustrating is when sometimes your camera is fine and sometimes it lags or doesn't take the picture at all. This is what I deal with regularly.
I didn't even think about indoor/outdoor/nighttime when I was thinking flash; I'd want something that works well with flash regardless of where the picture's taken.
And, yeah, good quality pictures are a must. :)
Thanks! You've given me more things to think about.
PS--Merry Christmas to you and your family!
