Paging Donald Trump

Today was Yesterday Lite--no more media, a number of applicants, but the afternoon was somewhat quiet. We did get another phone call congratulating us on what we'd done. Again, um, thanks. It was when I got home that I realized why--the local weekly put us as their main story. Ah, yes, my buddy the reporter who just would not take "no comment" for an answer. And, as I discovered when I read the article, he was more persistent than I realized. He did manage to find out a decent amount of info about the company. I have a smidge more respect for him now, but he still was pretty clueless during the four times he called.

My dear applicants: Number one, when there are two of you filling out applications, I expect each of you to fill out one application, not one of you to say you left all your info at home and the second of you started one, apparently didn't like how she was filling it out, and then used the second one as well. That's wasteful. And, for the first guy, you're dumb. Why on earth you would go out to apply for a job and then not bring anything with you to help you fill out an application is beyond me. Number two, there are no special flowers during this hiring process. I don't care if it's been a couple of weeks, or that you worked at one of the warehouses six and a half years ago; we are not hiring for the warehouse, and the job you did there is not the same as the jobs we do here. Really. They're not. Do you see the stack of papers I am holding? These are half of the applications I've received today. That's a dozen. I've already processed another dozen. Now imagine that quantity appearing on my desk daily for the past five weeks. We have had nearly 400 applicants this year and there is exactly one person going through them. One. So forgive her if she hasn't called you just because you did work here all those years ago. You do not stand out. You are not a special little flower. So please leave, and if we're interested, we'll call you.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, all our little protesters have now had three days of no call, no show, which is essentially job abandonment. Now, the advocates that helped with the protest claimed that there were 70 workers protesting. I received 33 letters to send out. Yeah, just what I thought--less than half the number they claimed. See, we're sending the people notices that they can come pick up some of their records whenever they want, but we want to make sure they receive the letters, so they're going by certified mail with a return receipt. Since I live so close to the post office, I got asked to take them. Except they weren't ready to go at my normal ending time; I stuck around until 5:15. That actually was fine, as I have plenty to do and was able to catch up on some stuff. (Some of the guys were like, what's wrong with this picture? It's 5:00 and she's still here! I said I was working on Mountain Time today.) And then I went to the PO, which thankfully is open until 6:30...except by sending the letters both certified and return receipt, I had to fill out two forms, each, for all the letters. Grr. And I only had $100; each letter came to $5.21. Only 19 went out. Luckily I have the forms I need so that I can do them at work tomorrow and finish off the rest. I felt bad for the PO dude because a situation like that is *exactly* what you want when it's 15 minutes before you close, but he showed me how to attach the forms and so I did that while he rang them up, which worked out perfectly. And now tomorrow I can have them all ready to go before I leave work.

It was still a very long day, and it's been a very long week, so I'm totally looking forward to the weekend. Too bad it doesn't start tomorrow.
