365 Facts: #344 (Random--Internal Clock)

Dec 10, 2007 18:36

I had another one for today, but I'll save it for tomorrow, as this one is timely.

For years I've had a strong internal clock. I'm not saying I always know what time it is, but I can generally wake up when I need to. I despise the sound of an alarm clock, so my internal clock will set itself for several minutes before the alarm goes off. It's a good thing. Well, unless I've been out late the night before, because I'll still wake up at my normal time, or by eight o'clock. I physically cannot stay in bed past ten. All you people who can sleep until noon or later, I don't get it.

Lately, though, I've been waking up to my alarm. I had the bright idea to gradually set my clock earlier and earlier, thinking I'd give myself plenty of time to check my email and do other little tasks in the morning. Besides, I've usually woken up at least once by six; might as well start getting up then on purpose. My regular clock is fast, so these aren't actual times, but I started setting it at 6:29 (fine), then 6:28 (fine), then 6:27 (not so fine). I don't know what it is about the difference between 6:27 and 6:28, but it's not doing it for me. Then, along comes today, where I woke up at 5:30 to the sound of my neighbor scraping the ice off his car. That's too early; I have about another hour. I proceeded to have this odd dream where my alarm didn't go off--I've never had a dream like that--and after a mini-daydream I woke to look at my watch and, wait a minute, it's seven o'clock! What the?! I know I set my alarm; why didn't it go off? Well, because we'd had a power outage, and according to the blinking time on the clock it was only 4:59. Whoops. So, apparently, my internal clock only had a 30-year warranty. Rats. I wonder if you can reset it somehow...
