Ah, the end of the month of music.
I've experienced three forms of recordings since I was a child--records, cassettes, and CDs. I have to say, I loved records, especially LPs because they were almost my size. I was an odd little child--who knew, right?--and instead of, say, a blankie, I carried around disco albums. Really. I had three of them, like Solid Gold 1, 2, and 3, and I would bring them with me to preschool or day care or whatever. I have no idea why. But I was careful with them. Strange, right?
Early grade school brought about cassettes. We had Madonna's Like a Virgin on both LP and cassette. I preferred the LP because the sleeve had all the lyrics. Cassettes, though, were kind of sturdier in a way to my child's mind, and they were easier to carry, so we tended to listen to them more and more.
It wasn't until I graduated from high school that we got our first CD player. Really. We lived without one until about May of '95, and then we realized we should probably play music at my graduation party. My parents stocked up on Beatles CDs; the ones I picked out were Disney. I am such a dork. (We listened to the Beatles at the party. I'm not that much of a dork.)
I haven't come into all that many CDs in the dozen years that have passed since then. Sure, I had to buy a crapload of them for school, but that's probably a good chunk of my collection. Realize that I have rules as to what I'll buy. I've been this way since the cassette era--I won't buy a CD (or tape) unless I like three songs on it. That's why my collection includes a number of compilations; I know I'll like what's on there. I've heard of far too many people buying a CD for one song and then discovering that it was the exact opposite of every other song on the album. That's not cool. Two songs, perhaps the rest of the album will be like them...or they could be the two anomalies. With three songs, you have a good shot of the rest of the album being similar. Three songs is worthwhile to me. Boy, that sounds kind of awkward. I mentioned Snow Patrol yesterday, among other things, and I'm at two songs now. If I come across a third single of theirs, I'd probably buy their album. But, even though I love the two I've heard, I still wouldn't buy it at this point. Of course, part of that could be because it'll now be kind of painful to hear their songs, but whatever.
I'm still into buying CDs, though. I don't own an iPod and don't use the MP3 player I have. I'm mainly a radio person, but every so often I'll put on a CD. Having entertained dreams of being a musician, I like the thought of contributing to that person's income. Plus, a lot of CDs are interesting, what with pictures and lyrics and stories sometimes. I would totally put pictures of myself at all ages on my CD, should I ever have one. I've thought about it a lot for a number of years. Maybe eventually I'll do it...before I turn 35. I'd say before I turn 30, but I'd really have to get cracking on that.
