A few days ago, dad asked if I'd help him with some yard work today. Sure. Thanks for asking. This way I won't be figuring that I'd be lounging around reading the paper for hours like the past few Saturdays. I do like feeling as if I've accomplished something.
...And then I went out to get the paper about 8:30 this morning and the air was already rather thick. Fantastic.
In fact, it was so humid today that when we got to the store, there were caution signs in the vestibule because the tile floor was all wet and slimy, and the doors into the store were fogged over. By the time we left, they'd had to put mats down like it was wintertime to keep people from slipping.
We forged ahead. Dad wanted to put out mulch in the front yard, and he wanted to trim the bushes next to the garage because it's been a while, and he had me rake under the front trees and bushes and do some weeding. I didn't mind that; from the front window I could see a vine growing through the bushes and it bothered me, so it was nice to get rid of some of those. I didn't get to do much weeding around the corner of the house, which gets to be pretty bad, but we still accomplished a lot in the heat.
Then, while taking a breather, we heard what sounded like screeching tires and possibly a smack. Uh-oh, somebody had an accident. That concerned us because mom had left the house by then and dad wondered if perhaps she had been involved. He thought the sound came from just east of our subdivision, though he was in the garage at the time and I wondered if the sound echoed a little in there. I was outside and next to the garage on the south side and it seemed like a Randall Road kind of thing. We did hear emergency vehicles coming from north and south, and by then we were both in the garage in the shade and it did sort of sound like they were just east of us, but once mom came home--I was sitting outside in the backyard for a bit by then--she said the accident had happened on Randall after all. I was just relieved that she'd missed it.
The rest of the day was much less eventful, though I did made us lunch beforehand. We have so much lettuce growing in the yard that I made another salad, plus pulled more leaves so I could have them in a sandwich with the tuna I'd made. My parents were grateful for the meal as well. Yes, it was real tuna this time, but kind of soupy since I hadn't drained it that well.
