After seeing the, frankly, poor lane configuration on Fabyan related to the construction, I've opted to avoid going through it when I'm heading home. I turn left earlier, before the lanes merge, in part because I dislike merging but also to avoid the terrible choices the engineers originally made, which was to have the left turn lane leading to Western have obstructed vision regarding oncoming traffic. I'm not interested in getting in an accident during rush hour.
On Wednesday night, though, I decided to give it a try since it was after 10 PM. I was delighted to see that the lane was reconfigured. Instead of being next to the single straight lane, which is the far right lane, it got moved over one lane--back to where it is when traffic flows normally. Oh good. I'd happened to get a green turn arrow, so I was able to just go. Last night, I got there, and I had a red light, even though through traffic had a green. Now that I got stopped, I was able to see that there was a sign stating left turn on green only, since oncoming traffic still was a bit obscured. Wow, thanks, engineers. I really appreciate that somebody came to their senses--or drivers complained--and they realized how dangerous the situation was with the original configuration.
Now, one driver didn't get the memo. I'm sitting at the red light, I think with another car behind me, and the westbound lane has the green. I hear honking coming from my right. Turns out there's a car trying to make a left turn from the right lane, because they didn't see the signage saying "left turn here," pointing to the redone lane, and now this guy is blocking traffic and ultimately making an illegal left turn from the far right lane. Great. Good job. At least there wasn't any eastbound traffic, but that could've been interesting. Hope he noticed the two cars just sitting there waiting to turn left as he went.
