Dad put out the hummingbird feeder recently. He cleaned it up and added fresh nectar, and it went up in the pergola doorway close to the kitchen window. We had no idea how soon we might see one, but at least it would be there if they needed it.
Well, today was the day. I was at the sink doing dishes after lunch when I opened the blinds so I could see outside, and just then, one flew by. Mom was near and came over to watch, so I had a witness. I win; I got to see the first one of the year.
It was pleasant out today, if a little cool, so I'd gone outside for lunch and then went back outside after dinner. It tends to be quieter out there than in the house, so I can concentrate on reading the paper. That's how I was able to hear the buzzing. We do have a few big ol' bumblebees flying around already, but when I looked toward the sound, it was the little hummingbird, sipping away at the feeder. It came back for dinner. Then, a little later, dessert. I just sat there smiling quietly, bummed that dad didn't know, but that's okay. I'm sure he'll get his chance soon enough.
