This week in grandma: Things are off, things are on

We didn't have a weekly phone call with grandma as she went to spend the weekend with my uncle. When I got home from band the other night, mom was showing me pictures from when they went out to eat with the whole crew. I love that they do that for her. Also, the baby is nearly a year old, as of next week, and she's so big.

That's been the highlight of the week so far. Tuesday grandma was supposed to get her Meals on Wheels, and somehow she missed the driver, so she didn't get her food and that automatically cancels future delivery. Luckily it also triggers a call to mom, who was able to reinstate delivery right away. I don't know what happened with this week's food, if she'll end up getting it or what, but that was frustrating.

Then, yesterday morning, grandma calls as I'm about to leave for work. Her coffee pot is broken and can mom order her another one? Mom went, are you *sure* it's broken? Grandma said, I tried it in another outlet and it didn't work; the light won't turn on! Mom said, okay, is it plugged into a ground fault outlet? Does it have a little red button in the middle? Press the button and plug in the coffee pot again. Grandma did, and sure enough now the coffee pot worked. She then joked to mom, cancel my order!

Mom said to me the other day, it's not going to get any easier from here on out, is it? No, mom, it's not. I'm wondering how long it'll take her to realize grandma should be in an adult living facility. Somewhere where she'll get some assistance but can still be independent, somewhere with a dining room so she can just go eat and not have to worry about grocery shopping or food delivery or what have you. Grandma's overall in pretty good shape, but why are we making this harder on everyone?
