Grandma's anxious adventure

Aug 27, 2023 20:19

I worked late on Friday, and when I got home, I got told a distressing tale by my mom. She'd gotten a call from grandma that started off with her going, don't worry, I'm home and I'm fine. ...Uh...

It was a convoluted tale, and it sounds like mom didn't even get the whole story from her, like maybe she talked to her brother and he filled in the gaps. What I got told is that grandma somehow lost her phone; it ended up being tangled in her bedsheets. But she was so panicky about that happening that she got in her car and started to drive to my uncle's house...in Algonquin. Which she hasn't done in a number of years. She got lost. How she made it home, and how she ultimately found her phone, I don't know. Also, we don't know why her first instinct was to get in her car to drive to my uncle's house.

Mom called her yesterday, in part because she went out with her friends today, and mom was all, oh, we'll see if Jennifer calls you. Well of course Jennifer is going to call her grandmother if it's 1 o'clock on a Sunday and she's not busy. The call was answered the first time, because I could briefly hear the TV in the background, but there quickly was silence, like dead air, and after a few seconds the call ended. I called again, and she answered again, but instead of her usual "Hellooo-oooo!" I got her saying my mother's name in a confused fashion. No, it's Jennifer. She sounded like herself for a few minutes, but the call didn't last very long as she said she didn't feel like talking. I suspect she didn't want to go into what happened on Friday with me, which is fine; she probably got a talking-to from two of her kids and didn't need it from me as well. But if she'd brought it up, I certainly would've asked questions and tried to talk to her about it.

Mom is going over there on Tuesday. Grandma needs help with certain things, and as we've joked, that's her food delivery day, so mom will probably see what grandma doesn't like, heh. But in all seriousness, Friday's episode is pretty concerning. Mom went there a week or two ago (I have no sense of time with this) and it sounds like grandma is admitting that this is getting hard for her, living on her own. I'm sure it is. I just wonder where she can go. Given what happened, I strongly recommend someplace where she doesn't need to drive. This rules out that regular apartment complex my uncle wanted to move her into. Like...no. He's had experience with an elderly parent. He should know better. Grandma is in far better shape now than my grandfather was years ago, but still. Let's make this time as easy on her as possible.

family, grandma
