On Saturday, I was outside reading the paper and enjoying the weather. Our air quality had improved significantly from earlier in the week, so I was able to sit outside for a while. Dad cleaned the birdbath earlier in the week and I was having fun watching the occasional drinkers and bathers.
At one point, there's this whoosh--a cardinal had come in from the south, I think it was passing through, but then it saw me sitting at the table and freaked out. He made an immediate U-turn, but that took him into the corner of the pergola; it almost looked like he was going to land on the chair over there. Then he zipped around and went out the way he came in, landing in a nearby tree. He kept hopping around on the branches, but the small twig-like ones, so he was kind of bouncing around for a bit. Finally, he came down to the birdbath and had a drink before flying off. It was so surreal and unexpected that I had to laugh when it first happened--well, hello!
Then today, I think the same one came flying by while I was out there again. This time he whooshed through from north to south, landing on the other tree. At least I didn't freak him out so badly this time? He's a nice bright red so he's easy to spot, so long as he doesn't get too high up in the trees. It was an amusing visit that stood out over the long weekend.
