No need to stop at Settler's Hill

Last week while driving home, I started seeing an odd marquee on the east end of Fabyan: Traffic light removal, May 12, drive with caution. That's...strange... And the area between that and the other marquee was between the Kirk and Raddant, so clearly it was talking about the light at Settler's Hill, the golf course on the landfill.

This light was never permanent. It's existed approximately as long as I've been driving though; I clearly remember thinking about this light when my friend Jenny, a year ahead of me in school, was in college, though I can't recall if I was in college and driving myself, or if I was still in high school, but let's say it's been up since the mid-'90s. For close to 30 years, this temporary light has been hanging at the entrance to the golf course. It hasn't been hard to see going eastbound, but westbound at night, due to topography, sometimes it's hard to see. You're coming down from the hill at Kirk, and because there are no poles and it's just been wires all this time, sometimes it can get confused with the light up at Raddant. Whenever the Settler's Hill light had changed, I was always concerned somebody was going to drive through it and t-bone whatever car was coming out of there. And it's not like there's a ton of traffic there, at least that I've seen. That's probably why they finally removed the light. The landfill part has been closed for years so there aren't a bunch of trucks coming in and out.

They started prepping the area on Thursday, removing the stop lines from the roadway. Friday morning, the right lane westbound was blocked off by trucks, likely to start the removal; by the time I went home, the marquee had changed to read, new traffic pattern, proceed with caution. So far, no issues, though it was weird to come home last night and only see the one set of stoplights.

There's still other work in that part of Fabyan. The south side of the street now has a curb cut-in and more trees have been cut down. On the north side, where the last house had been, the trees that had been the windbreak just got cut down. I'm really curious what's going on in that area and if the light coming down is related.
