Over the weekend, my middle cousin turned 30. I reminded mom of that as I got ready for contest, saying, this will make you feel old... She used to babysit those kids on Fridays when she was off from work and my aunt went to her job as a hairdresser. Mom went, wow, that's how long ago that was. I know it was while I was in high school, because I went with a few times when J1 was a toddler.
Well, he's now old enough to have his own house, which grandma visited the last time she was out in that area. We got a picture of the family and the "van Gogh," which is an inside joke with him. (Grandma had a print of a van Gogh piece and J1 went to school and told everyone she had a real van Gogh painting. Um...no. She does not have that kind of money. But she gifted it to him once he got the house.)
Here's the thing about grandma: She's opinionated, and she can't drop something once it gets in her head. She is obsessed with how small J1's house is. Any time he comes up, she goes, he has such a small house! Like, grandma, he has a house. It is something he owns and he presumably is paying for it himself. Considering his siblings are both married and everyone works, that's a real achievement. It doesn't matter how big it is. It's still his and his alone. And, it has three bedrooms. Grandma's all, oh, the bedrooms are small. ...So what? He is one person. He sleeps in one, he works in one, and he works out in one. What more does he need? Mom and I are perplexed that she's constantly mentioning it. Not everyone needs a place with big rooms. He's doing fine. Just be happy for him.
