Sunday morning, I'm looking out the kitchen window and I see something weird. Is there an odd glare coming off the neighbors' house? There was sort of a light color appearing in the air. We do get glare in the morning, but this was an odd shape. Further inspection revealed a gigantic spiderweb hanging off our fuchsia plant, basically blocking one of the doorways out to the yard. Also, a large spider hanging out in the middle of it. I warned dad about it, then went out with a small spray bottle to mist the thing to try to get a few pictures. That scared the spider away, and the pictures were a bit hard to take, and shortly after dad went out with a broom and did away with the web altogether. Given its proximity to the hummingbird feeder, which hangs next to the fuchsia, dad joked it was to catch them.
Monday morning, perhaps it wasn't a joke. The spider had returned and built another web, this one a foot or two higher than before--and blatantly in front of the feeder. Oh boy. Perhaps the spider really is trying to catch a hummingbird. You leave my little guys alone! It took us a long time to catch sight of them this year, and the past few days it hasn't been uncommon to see two of them at once. Believe me, I am perfectly happy to destroy that web to save the birds. I usually leave spiders alone, but not in this case.
