Ukraine

This past week has not been fun at my house, but it's peanuts compared to what's going on in Ukraine. I hope this is something where, when I do my year-end review, it'll have resolved by then.

This is what happens when someone unhinged is given power for a long period of time. This is why I'm so glad our idiot former president got kicked out of office; you know he was Putin's toady. Funny how he's currently condemning Putin's actions. Very few people agree with what Putin is doing, to the point where even Russians are going, what the hell. I do not blame the Russian citizenry for this at all. This is entirely Putin. He's Trump with a few more brain cells--doing this entirely for self-serving reasons. And lying about it: Oh, no, these troops I've put at the border? They're not going to invade! Why would you think that? *promptly invades shortly after the Olympics ends*

I'll admit to my ignorance over the subject just prior to the invasion starting. Last week started ominously, but my not being home meant I missed hearing about what was happening. That soon changed, as the morning news quickly became consumed with reporting on the situation, which is understandable. I feel terrible for the people of Ukraine. This is not of their doing; they were just living their lives until an outsider decided he wanted to impose his will on their country. I am so impressed by the citizens who are fully willing to fight for their country. There is no question. This is their home and they are defending it. My favorite part was hearing of them taking down road signs so the Russian invaders wouldn't know where they were. That's awesome.

I am not Ukrainian, but my ancestors are from southeast Poland, not terribly far from the border. It would not surprise me if displaced Ukrainians end up near where my grandmother's family was from. And I'm sure she could sympathize with them, as she was displaced into Germany during WWII. It's incredible how just one person could disrupt so many lives, basically the world. When I was in grade school, I had a classmate and her older sister who were of Ukrainian heritage. Their dad happened to be a state senator. They were the first people I thought of, since I don't know of any other people of Ukrainian heritage, and I hope they and any family members they might still have there are doing okay.

Good luck, Ukraine. The world is on your side.
