I finally did it; I ordered a new phone. You know your phone is old when it literally tells you, this phone is obsolete and you need to replace it. I'd seen something a few months ago about phones over a certain age no longer being compatible with something or other, and my phone was over that age. And long before that, it was running out of space. No kidding, sometime in the past couple weeks, my storage got so depleted it was listed in kilobytes. I think I was trying to get online--oh, probably around the weekend we had no internet. I used my phone a lot that weekend and it hasn't been the same since. But it's been having storage issues for probably in the two-year range at this point, and they're not getting any better, and it's my primary means of communicating with a few people, and they're people I like being in touch with, so yeah. It needs to happen.
Yet, I've been balking. I've had a note to myself for about a month now to buy a new phone. And still...it hasn't happened. I even picked one out, because dad suggested I go with a 5G phone, and I wanted one with more storage than the 8GB my current phone has, and there basically was one model available to me on Tracfone's website with those parameters. I knew I wanted to stay with an Android model because, while I do like the iPad, not everything is compatible with it, unfortunately. I can't comment on certain websites with it, and I can't do the speaking exercises on Duolingo with it. There was a Samsung model that fit the bill, and while it was about $300, which is...not cheap, it's also not entirely unreasonable. My current phone is an LG, so I'm sure there will be a learning curve, which makes me nervous. I'm not fond of change and I'm an old lady at heart who is not tech savvy. I basically have to take deep breaths and go, it'll be okay.
I finally took the plunge a little bit ago. With there being shortages of things, I didn't want to risk it running out of stock or anything. When I did go to the website, some of the options were, in fact, unavailable, but the one I've had my eye on was still there. Good news, it was part of a pre-Black Friday sale and was a whole $20 off! ...Which isn't even 10% off, but whatever, I'll take it. And then, because I'm upgrading my phone, I ended up with $75 off (in place of the $20 off, not in addition), so okay, that makes it slightly better. This is sort of my birthday gift to myself. I've had my current phone for about 5.5 years, so we'll see if this next phone makes it to 50 with me.
...Which frightens me that I'm only six years and nine days away from AARP. Good lord. And the Red Hats. We could have a mother-daughter team there, yikes. But they know how to have fun--mom told dad she was going to this newish restaurant in Geneva, where they have a once-a-month brunch. What mom neglected to tell dad is that it's a *drag* brunch. There are three drag queens who appear. Mom showed me some pictures, including one with a Red Hat lady where the caption was, guess which one's the hatter. I have to say, the one queen was super cute! At least one lady was convinced the person wasn't in drag. It seems like they had a good time, though, and I'm glad they're open to something like that. Hell, I'm surprised Geneva in and of itself is open to something like that.
