One of the memories shared by the Friends reunion involved "the routine," this dance routine that Ross and Monica had put together as kids that they performed at some sort of club to try and get on TV for New Year's Eve, I think it was. As it turns out, I have my own routine of sorts.
Somehow my memory was jogged that I had an exercise routine I'd put together on the Wii years ago. When you go into the screen that shows you the various categories to choose from--think aerobic, balance, strength training; there's five total--there's a button at the bottom that says My Wii Fit Plus or something like that. Click on it, and you're taken to a locker room. There are sets of routines put together by the fine people at Nintendo, but you also have the ability to put together a routine of your choice. (You can also look at your most popular exercises, and I think it even shows the least popular ones.)
I'd recalled having put together a routine years and years ago, back when I was home all the time and exercised regularly using the Wii. I'm guessing I'd picked certain exercises for it because I liked doing them, but I also wanted about a half-hour's worth of stuff to do. This clocks in at 31 minutes, though it's not a true 31 minutes; it's a little short. That's fine, though; it serves its purpose. I gave it a go on Monday, I believe. There was only one exercise, the balance bridge, that's one I don't regularly do on my own. A couple of the end ones are yoga poses I have done, but not often. Your choices were between the yoga ones and the strength training ones, and it's nice to see that everything is still completely doable. My poor knees are not the best anymore, so I'm glad I didn't have certain exercises included in there--no lunges or side lunges, for example. My knees make funny noises when I do those.
During the rest of the week, I took a break from picking my own exercises and went with the preset Wii routines, with particular categories (maybe Health and Form; there are four total) with subcategories (like Overindulged and Relaxation). Those include a mix of all the regular exercise categories; you might have a yoga pose with a strength training exercise and then one of the Wii Fit Plus exercises. The only bad thing is that some of the sets will use the nunchuck, which I don't normally use during the week, so I skipped those for now. Maybe I'll do them in the future. All of them are sets of three, with an estimated time that falls between 5-8 minutes, so doing two or three of them means I'm set for the morning. And it's nicer than picking the activities individually because there's no downtime between them; they flow into each other in some respects.
Of course, my doing my old routine for the first time in over a decade has gotten me some chiding from Fitty. I think the first time I did it, I got a note that said something like, it's been 4,321 days since you last performed your routine! (I don't recall the exact number, but it was at least in the 3K-day range.) I did it again this morning, and Fitty said, you know, you've had the same routine for a while...do you want to change it up a bit? Uh, no. It's good. Funny, because when you do the preset Wii routines, Fitty will tell you, if you find something that works for you, stick with it! Well, which is it? Stick with my routine, which works fine, or change it up? Sigh.
I think I wrote up the preset routines in a notebook somewhere; it might be nice to have easy access to what's in a routine and how long it is. I like to do 15 minutes in the morning when I get up, so to pre-plan some combinations would be a good thing. It was also nice not having to think too much this week; just click a couple buttons and go, and everything was set up for me. I liked that.
