"Hi, I'm Alan"

You may recall, back at T's graduation last year, that I happened to sit near the family of a certain well-known Chicagoland news anchor. Ever since then, there's been a part of me that's been like, if I ever run into him, I'm going to relate that story to him. But when am I ever going to run into him again?

...Today, that's when.

It started with a phone call. His name popped up on the caller ID. Uh, wait a sec, is that actually him? It's probably his wife, I thought. I answered, and...it was totally him. Holy cow. He needed some expertise on something--essentially the sort of thing we do projects on--and had some questions. He ended up coming in to talk in person about the situation, but before the phone call ended, he'd asked my name, and went, "Hi, I'm Alan." (He'd actually given his full name when I first answered, but it was nice that he did it again.)

So, I mean, when a local celebrity comes into your business, people tend to find a way to mosey on up to where you are. Remember, I'm a de facto receptionist, so I greet pretty much everyone. But after a few minutes, here comes DW...here comes the manager...I'd called BBC up, because he was the one who knew the most about the situation...and finally I went and grabbed my boss to say hi so he wouldn't miss out, heh. He was totally friendly and chatty and was excited to learn more about the situation, though bummed because the info we gave him wasn't what he was expecting to hear, even if it was interesting and informative. At one point I started looking stuff up on the internet to give him reference information, and he actually came around to my computer and started taking pictures of my screen for reference. Like, if you'd told me when I woke up today that he would even be in my orbit, let alone standing at my computer, I would not have believed you. (Yeah, and at times there was a bit of a lack of social distancing...but he did wear a mask the whole time.)

I'm kinda bummed that I'm not able to go into everything, since I try to keep my exact job private, but suffice it to say I found out I had some stuff in common with his family, and he's a pretty affable guy. Plus it's just nice to see someone from TV dressed down in gym shoes and stuff when you'd normally see him in a suit and tie, that sort of thing. And, well, I got to tell him my graduation story! That was exciting in and of itself.
