When we got new phones a few years back, we got with them the capability to block unwanted phone calls. We just never looked into using it. I'd quickly found out we could save numbers, and change the name part to something else, and did that for certain ones. My cell number likely came up as Illinois Call, so I was able to change it to my name, same with grandma's new number (as "[Grandma] Cell," from when she still had her landline).
Over the holidays, with mom home a few times, the calls had ramped up and both of my parent got annoyed by it. Illinois Call is ubiquitous, coming from these random numbers, never leaving a message. It's one thing if you're legit and leave a message; it's another if you just call and call and call. Fed up, dad dug out the manual and discovered how to block the offending numbers. Things have become more peaceful around here.
I got to see it in action today, shortly after I got home. The phone rings once, and the caller ID comes up as Blocked Caller, and that's it. You don't see the number and it doesn't ring again. Mom likes it because, since it only rings once, the answering machine doesn't kick on; if it does, you hear the message left via every phone in the house. Sometimes...you don't want other people to hear certain messages, you know?
I'm surprised it took as long as it did, but I'm glad it happened. I know I would see the same phone numbers pretty much day in and day out, and that's no fun. Again, if you're a legit business, you'll leave a message. At least then we'd know who you are. No message? Not worth our time.
