I had just left my subdivision yesterday when I was driving north on Western and encountered a squirrel in the road. You know how they are--they play chicken with the cars all the time. They dart into the middle of the road, and when they realize a car is coming, they either dart back to the same side they came from, or else they finish crossing. Alas for this fella, traffic was a bit busy, so there were a couple cars coming southbound while I was traveling northbound. The squirrel seemed to realize its fate and froze, tail curled up over its back and head. I braced for impact, closing my eyes and raising my shoulders. It was hard to tell where the squirrel was in relation to my car, though it seemed close to my driver's front wheel. When I passed the area, though, I didn't see anything in the rearview mirror--no lump on the ground, no squirrel in the middle, nothing running to the side. I didn't feel a bump so I'm guessing I didn't actually hit it. Then I wondered if I was driving around with a squirrel on my bumper, or grabbing onto my car's undercarriage. What happened to him? Did he escape when I wasn't looking? Did he survive? The mystery continues.
