Feeling shirty

My boss takes his vacation officially starting tomorrow, but he is taking his son to a summer camp and he wanted to get a head start on the trip and will leave early today. I got asked to work late to cover, so I'm getting to start late as well. Nice. I mean, I'm already up and dressed, and will be running a couple errands beforehand, but still. I don't have to be there right at 9. I will take it.

It's been an interesting week for my young coworker. Actually, really, it was just the one day, though I didn't find out about the second part until yesterday. On Wednesday, she comes in and...smells a little off. Actually, kind of a lot off. Like, if she was within a few feet of me, I had to breathe through my mouth. Now, I know she doesn't bathe every day, but she's not anywhere near an active person and I've not noticed her to smell funky or anything. This...was weird. She just smelled sour and it was highly unpleasant. So now I'm trying to figure out if I should say something to her, and how, because I can't let her deal with any clients that come in; they'll notice. Finally she gives me an out. When we worked together on Saturday, she'd shown me some of the Bath & Body Works body sprays she'd bought, as she'd left the bag in her car. Well, she'd sprayed herself with the vanilla scent, and went, do I smell like vanilla? I had to go, well...you kinda smell like you didn't shower. She actually thought I was kidding around for a moment, then realized, no, I'm being serious. She said, it's my shirt; it has a little smell. Little? No, seriously, that is not a little smell. She said, I know it's clean! I washed it! ...And then went on to explain that she puts some of her shirts in the dryer, and some of them she hung up...and some of them, she forgot they were in the wash and they were there for a while. This was one of those shirts. Sweetie, that's not clean; that's a science experiment. Thank goodness she had another shirt in her car and was able to go change; it was much better after that. When our main room renter came in, she complimented my coworker on the shirt, and then we had to go into the whole story of why she was wearing it. That's when the room renter went, yeah, if I leave anything in the washing machine for any length of time, I re-wash it. And now my young coworker knows why. I realized that this is also how my car had smelled right after I got it back, so I'm REALLY averse to that smell right about now.

So then when she left work Wednesday night, she was going to get dinner on her way home. No big deal...except as she's in the left turn lane going to turn, her car made an unusual sound and just died. So now she's stuck on a decently-busy road in the left turn lane and cars are honking at her, and she's frantically trying to call people to come help her, and even though she'd put on her four-way flashers, people are honking at her and telling her to get off her phone and make the turn. Thankfully a couple guys eventually helped her get her car off the street and into a nearby parking lot, and her sister and brother-in-law showed up and were able to get her car towed back home, but the general consensus was that her transmission blew. Yikes. This poor car has not been in good shape since she started working for us almost a year ago; she got into a car accident on her way to her first shift and the front has been bashed in a bit ever since. I don't know that that's related, but how scary for her! Knowing how she can be, I'm proud that she appeared to have handled the situation pretty well, and she was very eager to share the story with me as soon as she could--I'd been deeply involved with something when she arrived yesterday, and I'm sure it pained her having to wait 5-10 minutes, heh. She has a really good friend who gave her a ride to work yesterday, but I don't know how she got home, and her car situation is up in the air. I wish her luck. It's not been a good summer for vehicles at my job, that's for sure.
