Pre-camp craziness

Extra-crunchy crunch time. I'm working to get stuff done before I go, especially considering I'm gone the next two days. I managed to get my oil changed yesterday, and today wanted to do a couple things before my goddaughter's wedding--bank for gift, and then post office for stamps. Except, coming up Randall Road this afternoon, I saw emergency vehicles on the west side at McKee, and power crews on the east side at the gas station--and, tellingly, no price on the gas station's electronic sign. Uh-oh. Methinks the power is out. Sure enough, when I got up to the post office, driving through the townhouses so I'd be able to make a right turn into the lot, I encountered a guy who said the power was out and they couldn't conduct any business. Luckily I can stop at the local post office between work and band tomorrow, so this is no big issue, but bummer. I had a feeling my house might be affected as well. And, yes, when I walked in my door, the clock on the stove was blinking. The power had only been on for 12 minutes. I have no idea what happened, because it didn't appear that any power poles were down or anything, but I'm glad the power was on so I could cook dinner. I was preparing myself to call dad to let him know, but I didn't have to.

Meanwhile, I emailed all the counselors on Sunday, minus the potential late-add rookie. This is my last-minute(-ish) email about what to expect for Saturday, who's coming when, that sort of thing. Some of the parents of rookies asked questions, and I find it funny that they're coming to me in some respects, especially since Mr. C had been their director for school, but it's fine. They're my minions; that's why I'm here, to answer questions. So then I hear from the parents of the late-add rookie, saying he's coming, but they haven't heard from me, so Mr. C told them to email me. This is good, since I never got full confirmation that he was a go, and therefore didn't have an email for him (mind you, his younger brother is coming and I could get their email off the camper roster, but sometimes rookies have their own personal addresses and sometimes they use a parental account, so it was hard to tell what to do). So now I'm forwarding all the previous emails, and then I get an email from Mr. C that he wants everyone to send in ID pictures ASAP, so at least I was able to include the final rookie on that and announce him to the rest of the counselors. We need no more than 25 counselors; we're now at 24. Phew. We'd better be done here.

Also, the most unusual thing I've had to do so far has been to clean my soap container. See, camp is not known for providing soap in the cabin bathrooms. For a while now, we've taken it upon ourselves to bring our own soap. Last year, I stocked up at Kmart, and it turned out I got enough that it'll likely last through next year. Sweet. I ended up buying something at the Container Store to hold it all, very convenient, and naturally I pulled it out when I started packing. However, to make sure people know it's mine and not the camp's, I wanted to label it with fancy tape. It was when I started pulling the bottles out of the container that I noticed one bottle hadn't been entirely closed, and soap had not only leaked out, but crystallized. Interesting. Didn't know it would do that. I then had to clean my soap containers--the box itself, and several bottles. Wacky. But they're clean and dry and good to go now. Plus, bonus, I'll have a nice container when all is said and done.

I'm not totally done packing, but I'm probably 80% of the way. I have a few things to decide on, mainly involving clothes, and then there's the final pack-up that I can't really do until Friday or Saturday. In the meantime, I have a few last pictures to upload (I'm only a month behind! And, actually, it's really more like weeks since I have uploaded Windmill Fest), the most recent camper list to go through, and Mr. C claimed he would call me tonight, but he hasn't yet. And, well, I need to sleep. My back is still sore from the carpet adventure, it's still warm in the house, and I have too much on my mind. I do NOT want to keep waking up at 4 AM, but on the plus side, at least I'm experiencing the same type of sleep deprivation I would get at camp. Right? Right??? To think I used to do this to myself purposely. What was I thinking?

packing, oil change, camp, bank, power outage, post office, mr. c, lack of sleep
