So, I get on the computer to check my email. On a whim, I decide to check my AOL account. I typically go there once a week, but since I've been getting camp-related emails there, I've upped it to twice a week. However, AOL has changed its website, and half the time (for me, at least) the mail button isn't there. That makes it just a tad bit hard to check my mail. Okay, fine. I close the window and figure I'll open a new one and go through my regular online routine (Yahoo mail then LJ).
"The application Explorer has unexpectedly quit."
Gee, thanks. Now what?
I've been going though my old emails scrounging for forwards for
_forward_march_ (hey, it's my page, I'll pimp it as much as I want to). I'm finally running really, really low on the ones saved to our external drive, Firewire1. Basically there's a survey I've received from a bunch of different people, some ASCII pics that I'll have to fiddle with, and maybe one or two other things I just don't feel like putting up at this point in time. I know I have a bunch of saved ones on the downstairs laptop; the only problem is that I saved them all as AOL files, and since AOL has given me issues for close to a year, I'm not sure how easy those will be to retrieve.
Upstairs, however, I have a ton of disks with mail from my college years. Hmm. And this computer has a disk drive. Hmm.
I grabbed a disk, appropriately named "Forwarded Mail" (I tell ya, I've got tons of it...hence the site)...and the computer does not read the disk. There are no sounds made when I pop in the disk. No little disk-y icon appears on screen.
*insert frowny-face icon* --> :(
The same thing happens when I try a zip disk.
Aha. But there is a dad within easy access. He suggests changing the operating system--perhaps OS X can't read disks? Sure enough, when I switch over to 9, it works. Boy, does it work. And boy, are the icons and other graphics large and rudimentary. It was charming, in a way. Oh, how old-school. And in OS 9 there's even a semi-working version of AOL, meaning the emails I'd saved to the disk are readable! Sweet! Now I just need to copy them into SimpleText/Text Edit. The stuff that I'd already put into SimpleText was fine; I just saved it onto Firewire1 and switched back over to OS X...and voila! Happy Jen! Yay! Now I have tons more stuff to fiddle with. *does happy dance*
If I hadn't already been feeling better after yesterday, this would have perked me right up.
(And I apologize to all you non-Mac people who may not realize what all I am talking about. Don't worry, I vaguely understand it myself. I was a music major, remember? :P~~~ )
